91st death anniversary of Haipou Jadonang observed

Zeliangrong Union, Zeliangrong Women Union and Zeliangrong Students Union, Senapati Zone today jointly observed the 91st death anniversary of Haipou Jadonang at Maram Secretariat, Senapati.
It was attended by Gabriel Chawang, president, Zeliangrong Students Union, Senapati Zone; Ng Luikang Chawang, president Zeliangrong Union, Senapati Zone; and ML Kaisungbou, Additional Superintendent of Police, Senapati among others.
Speaking on the occasion, Gabriel Chawang stated that the late freedom fighter Jadonang Malangmei (1905-1931) popularly known as Haipou Jadonang was a Naga spiritual leader and political activist from Manipur, British India.

"He established the Heraka religious movement which was based on the ancestral Naga religion and declared himself to be the Messiah King of the Nagas.
His movement was widespread in the Zeliangrong territory before the conversion to Christianity", said Gabriel.
The student union president continued that Haipou Jadonang espoused the cause of an independent Naga kingdom Makam Gwangdi or Naga Raj which brought him in conflict with the colonial British rulers of India.
"Haipou Jadonang was hanged by the British on August 29, 1931 and succeeded by his cousin sister Rani Gaidinliu.", he added.
Ng Luikang Chawang mentioned that the freedom fighter was born at Kamron village in Tamenglong district.
"Haipou Jadonang started the No Tax movement in the land and challenged the British regime.", he added.
Later, CSO leaders of Senapati district paid floral tributes to the departed freedom fighter.
