Two sentenced to 5 years RI

The court of Special judge (NIA) has sentenced two people involved in the hand grenade attack at Raj Bhavan in January 2019 to five years' rigorous imprisonment.
During the sentence hearing, special PP said that the two have already been convicted by the court under UAPA 1967 and other sections of IPC and prayed for sentencing them to maximum terms as their offences are against the state and people with intent to terrorise people.
However, the defence counsel prayed for minimum penalty as dictated in the respective sections of law, citing illness among family members of the accused people and several other inconveniences.
After hearing both the arguments, the court sentenced the first convict to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 5 years under section 18, 20 and 38 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 and under Section 120-B of the IPC.
All the sentences are to run concurrently.
Further, the period for which the accused has been in custody i.e., 1 year, 7 months and 1 day will be commuted from the total sentence period, it added.
Similarly, the court sentenced the second convict to five years rigorous imprisonment under Section 16,18,20 and 38 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967; under section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act, 190 and under section 307 and 120-B of the IPC.
Similarly, all the sentences are to run con currently and the period for which the accused has been in custody i.e., 1 year 5 months and 12 days will be commuted from the total sentence period, the court directed.
