Imphal, August 10 2021:
The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has served notices to the Director General of Police on the wide scale publicity shown via electronic media while policemen conduct frisking and checking of suspected persons as well as house to house search ahead of the Independence Day celebration on August 15 .
The DG was also asked to return a reply by August 31 .
The Commission, in an office memorandum, said that the police must ensure the right to privacy and dignity of the citizens at all times, though the police are doing their duty ahead of the Independence Day celebration.
Saying that a suo motu proceeding has been taken up based on the video footage and complaints of the concerned citizens who expressed their displeasure with the action of police in taking photographs of men and women and publishing it in the media, the MHRC asked the DGP to respond to the suo-motu case by August 31 .
