Imphal, December 09 2009:
Atleast one person was killed while three other sustained injuries when two trucks collided at a spot along National Highway 39 in between Changoubung and Kangpokpi under Senapati district late evening today.
According to police report, the collision took place between a Senapati bound 407 mini-Tata truck (MN-01/6042) carrying pigs and an Imphal bound truck (NL-01A/8929) carrying paints from Dimapur at around 5 pm today.
In the incident, driver of the mini-truck lost his life and three other passengers including two women sustained injuries.
The deceased driver is also the owner of the mini-truck.
He is likely to be a resident of Thongjao in Thoubal police.
The two injured women passengers have been admitted to PHC Kangpokpi while the third injured victim who was rescued by a joint team of District Police, IRB and Assam Rifles from being crushed in the collision has been identified as Angom Ibothem (47) s/o Jayanta of Kakching Khunou Angom Leikai.
The driver of the truck carrying paints reportedly fled from the site of the accident.
The district police have registered a case in this connection.
Protest staged: Protesting against taking over cultivable land, womenfolk of Waithou Chiru today staged a Wakat Meepham.
It is said that around 2 months back, some unidentified persons used excavator and removed earth from Taothabi Loukon, which covers an around of about 4 paris of cultivable land and located near the village.
However, the villagers intervened to stop removing earth.
Chairperson of Waithou Chiru Meira Paibi Lup Gapuikip informed that this Loukon has been the main source of livelihood for the people of the village for over 100 years.
More than 700 people belonging to 115 households have been depending on this Loukon.
So no one, whether it is private individual or group or Government Department should not interfere in the Loukon.
