With effect of January I next year, the State Transport Department would launch drive against vehicles which have no third party insurance.
Disclosing this to The Sangai Express, an official of the Transport Department explained that under section 146 of the Motor Vehicle Act, it is mandatory for all the engined vehicles including commercial vehicles and two wheelers to have third party insurance.
So a drive would begin with effect from January 1 next year.
During the course of the drive, if any one of the engined vehicles were found not having third party insurance, then they would be fined Rs 500 in accordance to the provision of the Motor Vehicle Act, the official informed.
The official further explained that the amount of insurance to be paid annually differs from vehicle to vehicle.
For the passenger vehicles, the insurance amount is based on the number of passenger seats while it is based on tonne for the trucks, the official added.
