Imphal, December 09 2009:
YWC, Thambalkhong failed to translate territorial possession into goals consequently suffering a 3-0 defeat at the hands of former champions NEROCA, Sangakpham in a second round match of the 53rd CC Meet football tournament at Mapal Kangjeibung today.
Earlier, in the other match played at the same venue another former winner SSU, Singjamei advanced to the pre-quarters with a 2-1 victory over BYFY, Yairipok.
In the YWC and NEROCA clash, the former had a series of inroads into the rival zone but not only were the Thambalkhong forwards found lacking in clinical strike but the defenders also failed to hold their fort as their opponents relied on swift counter-attacks.
In one such move, Yarmeipei found an unmarked Kh Satish who promptly struck to open the score with his second goal of the competition in the 44th minute.
Satish had also scored in the match against YOSC, Khurai.
Another defensive lapse ended with Satish extending the advantage off a Th Surjit pass five minutes after the lemon break.
YWC's miseries continued when H Chakravorti was brought down inside the danger zone with K Premjit converting the penalty 10 minutes from the final whistle.
SSU, meanwhile, had no such defensive problem as they hung onto their lead to emerge as the victors against the Yairipok side who managed to pull back one in the 78th minute.
After the first half ended in a scoreless stalemate, Gaichungam fired home the Singjamei opener in the 50th minute from near the left corner before E Abocha doubled the advantage in the 74th off a GG Kabui cross.
