Imphal, April 19 2013 :
The JAC against the killing of truck driver S Babu has pledged to continue its agitation until justice is delivered in connection with the killing of the driver while also affirming not to claim the body until the demands raised by the JAC are fulfilled.
The JAC affirmed its stance today during a public meeting with civil society organisations at Samurou Bazar.
The public meeting strongly cautioned that the group concerned involved in the killing of Babu should be held responsible for any outcome resulting from its refusal to clarify on the matter.
Equally, the Govt should share the responsibility for its failure to book the perpetrators.
Maintaining that the killing of driver Babu is the fallout of Govt's failure to provide adequate security along the highways, the public meeting also decided to press the Govt for payment of necessary compensation to the family members of the deceased driver.
It also demanded the Govt to come out in public over the lapse of security on NHs.
The meeting also urged all concerned individuals and organisations to extend assistance to the family members of the deceased driver.
Further, the meeting resolved to mount pressure on the Govt to formulate long-term policy including setting up of Highway Protection Force on National Highways so as to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
Representatives of various civil society organisations, transport bodies and student organisations and Meira Paibis have also pledged to coordinate with the JAC in its endeavour to find justice.
The JAC also acknowledged the cooperation extended by all concerned towards the success of the 48-hr general strike called by the JAC.
Meanwhile, a sit-in protest against the killing of driver Babu was staged at Yairipok Bazar today under the aegis of Apunba Nupi Khunai Lamjing Meira Lup, Yairipok.
