Imphal, April 19 2013 :
Naga Chiefs' Association Chandel, has objected the proposed construction of Chakpi Multi-Purpose Project (Mega Dam) across the Chakpi River at Lijong under Chakpikarong Sub-division in Chandel District while asserting that the design of the Govt of Manipur in clandestinely pursuing the project without the free, prior and informed consent of the indigenous people living in and around the site of the Dam is a violation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of the Indigenous People(UNDRIP) and recommendations of the world Commission on Dams 2000 .
A statement issued by the NCAC demanded that the Govt of Manipur withdraw its proposal immediately in the best interest of the general populace living in the district since time immemorial.
Maintaining that the people of Chandel District welcome development in the district, it contended that the proposed dam is not a development but a disaster for most of the ancestral lands and agriculture lands will be submerged and thousand of villages and churches will be submerged for which the Naga Chiefs can't remain a silent spectator but to fight united without compromised.
