Imphal, April 19 2013 :
Even as the 24 hours chakka bandh called by transporters against the murder of a truck driver and burning of two trucks on Imphal-Jiribam highway on April 17 has ended, the 48 hours general strike called by the JAC constituted against the murder is still in force.
However there is no report of any untoward incident.
Driver Sorokhaibam Babu who was transporting FCI rice was shot dead by some unidentified persons on Imphal-Jiribam highway apart from burning two trucks.
Taking strong exception to this unexplained killing and violent assault, the All Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union called a chakka bandh since last midnight and it ended this midnight peacefully.
Except for private vehicles, no passenger vehicles were seen on roads during the chakka bandh.
However, school van service was not affected as it was exempted from the purview of the bandh.

On the other hand, the JAC constituted against the murder of S Babu called a 48 hours general strike with effect last midnight till April 20 midnight.
There is no report any untoward incident on account of the general strike till the time of filing this report.
The general strike was imposed in full force along Mayai Lambi between Hiyangthang and Mayang Imphal.
Road blocks in the form of boulders, timbers and bamboos were put across the road in this section.
Used tyres were also burnt on the road.
Yet, the general strike has little impact in Imphal city and other parts of the State.
Major commercial centres like Khwairamband Keithel, Paona Keithel and Thangal Keithel did their normal business as usual.
Nonetheless, police personnel were deployed and kept on high alert in all sensitive areas so as to avert any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, MLA Khumukcham Joykishan has donated Rs 10,000 to the bereaved family of truck driver Sorokhaibam Babu who was shot dead by unidentified persons on Imphal-Jiribam highway on July 17 .
Joykishan personally handed over the amount to the wife of Babu at their Samurou Awang Leikai home today.
The MLA also participated in the sit-in-protest staged against the murder at Samurou Keithel.
Speaking at the protest site, MLA Joykishan stated that such shocking incidents and crimes could have been averted if a battalion of the State force is deployed along the highway.
