State proposes border haats to boost trade

The State Government has forwarded a proposal to the Ministry of Commerce and Industries to set up three border haats on the Indian side of the Indo-Myanmar border.
The State Government is also working to include yongchak (tree bean) in the lists of approved trade items between India and Myanmar through Moreh and the matter would be put up at the 4th meeting of the Joint Trade Commission.
An official source informed that the Commerce and Industries Department of the State sent a proposal to the Centre for setting up border haats at Bihang, New Somtal and Konkan Thana The department is awaiting the Ministry's reply.
The Indo-Myanmar border trade would be reviewed at the fourth Joint Trade Commission meeting scheduled to be held at New Delhi on September 27 .
Ahead of the Joint Commission Meeting, a preparatory meeting was held at New Delhi a few days back.
The meeting discussed on increasing the sanctioned list of trade items by adding another 15 items to the present 40 items, conveyed the official source.

Among others, the State Government is proposing inclusion of fish, yongchak, meat and sand in the enhanced and revised list of items sanctioned for trade between the two countries.
Another agenda of the meeting was introduction of bus service between Imphal and Mandalay.
It is reported that the Indian delegates would raise the question of whether or not the Myanmarese authority has issued the necessary notification to turn the border trade into normal trade in the upcoming Joint Commission meeting.
