Imphal, September 04 2011:
A day-long public discussion on the theme 'Enforced Disappearance and Arbitrary Detention of Gurumayum Jiteshwor Sharma alias GM Changjou alias Gypsy' was held at the Nagamapal Singjubung Leirak Gurumayum Mandop today in connection with the reported arrest of the proscribed RPF/PLA's assistant publicity secretary from a Dimapur house recently.
While speakers who addressed the gathering recounted numerous cases of extra-judicial killings and involuntary disappearance of individuals after arrest by security forces in the State, Human Rights Alert director Babloo Loitongbam said such incidents need to be opposed and condemned by every section of the society.
Highlighting that such incidents are a direct fallout of prolonged imposition of AFSPA 1958 in Manipur and the immunity enjoyed by the security forces under the draconian law, he called upon the people to extend unconditional support and join in the movement being sustained by Irom Chanu Sharmila for total repeal of AFSPA.
Suggesting that family members of GM Changjou should complain to the United Nations Organisation on the reported arrest and non-confirmation of his arrest or whereabouts by the Army authorities, Babloo exuded confidence that the UN will take a definite action on the matter.
Further opining that global organisations involved in protecting human rights should be involved in the movement of the people of Manipur against brutal and inhumane acts of security forces, the rights activist cautioned that isolated movement will only embolden the men in uniform to act more audaciously.
