Imphal, September 21 2010:
The Chakanlong Tanpui Women Nishaband Society has accused 26 Assam Rifles of physically assaulting one Henry Gangmei (25) s/o Dimdailung Gangmei of Tupul.
After taking Henry into their custody where he was thrashed and interrogated for a while, the AR personnel forced him to hold a pistol which was photographed promptly so that Henry can be implicated to be a member of outlawed organisation.
The whole incident took place on September 12 and all these scenes were witnessed by Chakanlong village chairman Rampou Kamson inside the AR camp.
Learning about the evil designs of the AR personnel to take Henry to Imphal, womenfolk of the area protested and blocked the AR vehicles carrying Henry.
In a complaint dispatched to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, the women society contended that Henry Gangmei does not belong to any outlawed organisation.
Saying that Tamenglong is a peaceful zone, it questioned whether the AR personnel posted there were for security of people or should they become predators.
Before the arrest of Henry Gangmei, Col Gourav of 26 AR Longmai post announce in the public that once Henry is arrested then he would be eliminated over Tupul bridge in a spectacular manner.
Pointing out that any military officer appointed and functioning under the Constitution and law of the land should act consistent to the set rules of the law, it raised serious apprehension that Col Gourav and 26 AR personnel of Longmai and Tupul posts may become predators of civilians one day or the other in case the present trend of extra judicial activities continue.
The women society further urged upon the Home Minister for immediate intervention and appropriate punitive action against those erring personnel and the rogue colonel before any untoward incident occurs in the area.
