Imphal, September 21 2010:
The regional office of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), running in Imphal for the last 37 years, is likely to be shifted to Guwahati.
A decision regarding this has been taken by NABARD head office in Mumbai.
Alleging that the acts vested interests were behind the decision to shift the regional office to Guwahati, Federation of NGOs and NABARD Partners Manipur revealed that forced sanctioning of projects, even at gun point, committed by vested interests resulted in the shifting of the office.
Addressing media persons at a press conference, Amu Kamei advisor of the federation said that normal working of the regional office was disrupted when some people forced the office to sanction projects in favour of them.
With increasing pressure in the last few months, the office at Lamphel was not been able to function well.
This is an unfortunate thing, he added.
He revealed that in the last part of July this year, secretary G Alexander of NGO, Samaj Vikash Kendra, forced NABARD officer-in charge to sanction a project worth Rs 6.10 lakh.
Since then, the officer in-charge has been transferred to Patna on his request to the head office at Mumbai.
The force and threat to the officer resulted in the process of shifting of the office, he revealed recalling earlier incidents of similar kinds.
