The 62nd Manipur Kanba Numit commemorating the September 21, 1948 incident also known as Pungdongbam incident was observed at Irabot Park, Challou in Lamlai today.
Veteran communist leader and Health and Family Welfare Minister Ph Parijat led the people in offering floral tributes to Irawat.
Chairman of CPI Control Commission M Ibohal, MLA Borajao, former minister, Dr M Nara etc.
were also present during the function.
March past contingents of students of various schools and volunteers of All India Students' Federation (AISF) took salute to the life size portrait of Irawat.
In all, 62 contingents including 15 different schools, 34 AISF units, six band parties and five AMYPOs (All Manipur Young Pioneers' Organisation) took part in the march past.
Irabot Celebration Committee in association with Lamlai Local Council, CPI organized the function to remember the incident of September 21, 1948 in which hundreds of people marching towards Imphal to attend a mass protest rally from Pundongbam to MDU Hall, Yaiskul Police Lane was dispursed by the police.
Many suffered injuries in the crackdown.
The mass protest planned under the leadership of was against the decision of the Government of India to merge together Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Cachar and Karbi Anglong districts of Assam to form a new State called Purchachal with Silchar as its capital.
This incident has come to be known as Pungdongbam incident and the day is being observed as Manipur Kanba Numit every year.
