Chandel Mass Protest Rally

, Dec 20: The Chakpi River Protection and Development Committee organised a Mass Rally in protest against the proposed Chakpi Multi-Purpose Project at Chandel District Headquarters today.
The rally commenced from Mini Indoor Stadium and proceeded towards DC Office Complex, Chandel where a memorandum addressed to Deputy Commissioner, Chandel was handed over to Additional Commissioner of Chandel, Neilenthang Talien as the Deputy Commissioner was out of Station.
During the procession, a large number of protestors were holding several placards which inscribed "Stop construction of Multi-purpose dam at Chakpikarong', 'Dam construction no peace', 'No water no life', 'Immediately revoke Cabinet Decision for construction', 'Save environment & Forest', 'Stop using of poison and explosive bomb in the river', 'We want peace not dam", etc.
and the protestors also chanted slogans against construction of the proposed multi-purpose project.
Speaking at the sidelines of the protest, Ps.
Ngamnung, President of Chakpi River Protection and Development Committee said that the mass protest rally was organised in protest against construction of proposed dam over Chakpi river and the use of poison and other explosive materials in the river for fishing as the river was the main source of water for domestic uses.
As such, the government should also stop preparing Detail Project Report and cancel the the proposed construction of Multi-purpose project at the earliest, demanded the President.
While appealing to the state government to revoke the cabinet decision for construction of Multi-Purpose projects in the State, the president also further said that if the government wants to build a dam, a small dam should be built under the guidelines of United Nations instead of such Mega dam.
