Chandel rallies against proposed mega dam

Chakpi River Protection and Development Committee organised a mass rally in protest against the proposed Chakpi Multi-Purpose Project at Chandel district headquarters
today.
The rally commenced from Chandel mini-indoor stadium and proceeded towards DC office complex where a memorandum addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, Chandel was handed over to Additional Deputy Commissioner, Chandel Neilenthang Telien as the DC was out of station.During the procession,large number of protesters held several placards inscribed with 'Stop construction of multipurpose dam at Chakpikarong,' 'dam construction no peace, no water, no life,' 'immediately revoke the Cabinet decision for construction,' 'save environment & forest,' 'stop using of poison and explosive bomb in the river,' 'we want peace, not dam,' etc.
The protesters also shouted slogans against construction of the proposed multipurpose project.
Ps Ngamnung, president of Chakpi River Protection and Development Committee said that the mass protest rally was organised in protest against construction of the proposed dam over Chakpi river and the use of poison and other explosive material in the river for fishing as the river was the main source of water for domestic use.
As such, the Government should also stop preparing Detail Project Report and cancel the propose construction of multipurpose project at the earliest.
While appealing to the State Government to revoke the Cabinet decision for construction of multipurpose projects in the State, the president further said that if the Government wants to build a dam, small dams should be built under the guidelines of United Nations instead of such Mega dam.
