Imphal, June 14 2021:
The All Manipur Nupi Marup has come out strongly against the decision of the BJP led NDA Government to hike prices of fuel instead of helping people combat the ravages of the Covid pandemic.
Demanding a rollback, the All Manipur Nupi Marup in a statement said that hike in prices of petrol and diesel is nothing but loot in broad daylight as it has severely tormented the working class and middle class people who are already in distress due to the pandemic.
Fuel consumption had hit a new low with the advent of the Covid second wave in the country from March and subsequent imposition of strict restrictions in movements and activities, but surprisingly the Central Government has hiked prices of petroleum products 22 times from May 4 till June 14, the body said.
The cost of 1 litre of petrol has even gone beyond Rs 100, the body said while adding that such a move which favours corporates only has resulted in rise in prices of all essential commodities including food and medicines thereby adding to the burden of the working class people.
In view of the pandemic and hardships faced by common people, the Central Government should roll back the hike in fuel prices, the body said.
The body also further maintained that it will endorse and support the fortnight protest against the price hike slated to be held from June 16 to June 30 under the aegis of Left parties.
