Kakai hunger strike enters 5th day; many show solidarity
Source: The Sangai Express

Kangpokpi, December 25 2021: As the Christian community celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ on Saturday, the 'fast unto death' hunger strike of Kakai Singsit entered its fifth day.

Demanding justice for the trio, Hentinseh Singsit, Henminlun Misao, and Seigoulun Singsit, who were arrested in connection with B Gamnom Killing, Kakai Singsit, former leader of ATSUM began his 'Fast Unto Death' hunger strike at his residence in Motbung on December 20 .

Many people and civil society organizations of the district visited the family to exhibit their solidarity to Kakai Singsit.

Political activist and intending candidate of 51-Saitu AC, Dr Lamtinthang Haokip and his wife Regina also visited Kakai Singsit to join their fight for justice.

Speaking to media persons, Dr Lamtinthang Haokip said, "I would convey to the people of Manipur that we are not here sitting together because it's Christmas rather we are here for a very unfortunate incident that occurred on October 12 where four villagers, including a minor boy was killed in an indiscriminate firing at B Gamnom village in Kangpokpi district" .

He continued that the Government instead of catching the real culprits arrested three innocent people who were loitering in Motbung area.

Dr Lamtinthang Haokip also appealed to the State Government to release the trio as their innocence have been proven with evidence.

He also raised questions over the silence of the local MLA when three innocent villagers from his constituency were unlawfully arrested and detained for more than two months.

"Christmas is the time for merry-making and celebration for every family but it turns out to be a sorrowful and lachrymose day for Kakai and his family as three of their family members were enduring the wrath of AFSPA's immunity", he added.

Dr Lamtinthang Haokip also appealed to all people of Manipur to come forward and stand for justice while urging the CSOs of the state to be a watchdog for such undemocratic and unlawful acts upon innocent civilians in the state.

Meanwhile, Kakai Singsit alleged that the innocent trio were forced to confess on being involved with B Gamnom firing.

"Being from a poor family, we have sold everything we can to fight for justice but our hope of getting justice seems to vanish in thin air as justice seems to be only for the high and mighty in the state", he asserted.

"I have great hope that the people of Manipur and the various civil society organizations of the state will come forward for our cause in the larger interest of justice and humanity", Kakai added.

Thadou Students' Association Sadar Hills led by its president, Tolminthang Misao and secretary, Lalboi Lhouvum also joined Kakai Singsit on Christmas Day to show their solidarity.
