Imphal, October 20 2015:
Kangleipak Peoples Union (KPU) has urged the State Government to set up a modern school where children of the State may learn history, culture, customs, religion and language of Manipur at the campus of erstwhile Tombisana High School instead of constructing a market shed.
In a statement, the union said that the land where the erstwhile Tombisana school stood was gifted by British Political Agent JB St Word to a group of social workers with the sole purpose of setting up a school in 1931 .
The statement further said that the social workers included Ng Gopal, A Heramani, W Amu, G Bankibihari Sharma, G Lalita Madhop, S Gaurahari, Ng Leiren, Kh Muhindro and DD Sharma.
These social workers formed a committee to establish Tombisana High School with the fund of Rs 3000 donated by RK Tombisana Devi, the statement said.
Stating the land patta of the campus is still with the school managing committee, the statement said that the committee is a registered body and it has been regularly paying land tax to the Government till date.
As such, the State Government must not abolish a school which can't be sidelined while studying the history of Manipur, the statement observed.
