Imphal, April 17 2015 :
Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has questioned KCP (MC) if the armed outfit will impose ban on functioning of Catholic schools the whole year if their demands are not fulfilled.
The armed group has been imposing ban on functioning of Catholic schools since April 1 .
In a statement issued on March 31 last, the outfit said that the ban was put into effect as these schools had failed to conform to the 'sincere proposal' of the outfit and the public.
Expressing deep concern over indefinite closure of Catholic schools, DESAM president Moirangthem Angamba while speaking at a press meet urged the armed outfit to work in the interest of the general public.
Saying that indefinite closure of educational institu- tions is not a right step, Angamba said that it is the fate of 15,000 students that could be at stake with the imposition of such diktats.
In this regard, Angamba strongly urged the Government to intervene into the matter and make immediate arrangement for opening of these 'banned' schools.
He also questioned the purpose of having a democratically elected Government if they are unable to tackle such issues.
On the other hand, Angamba also urged authorities of these schools to spell out their stand on the issue within five days.
DESAM would not remain silent if the ban continues he said adding that prolonged closure of schools is tantamount to violation of the right to education and this ban would lead to distraction of the students from their studies.
Expressing concern over maintaining silence by guardians and parents on the issue, Angamba urged the representatives of guardians' association to visit DESAM office at 11 am on April 19 .
He further said that school transport associations must also make their inconveniences public at the earliest.
