Imphal, April 17 2015 :
All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) observed the 35th edition of the "Meekap Thokpa Numit" (Realisation Day) on Friday at the two martyrs' memorial site, Pishum Chingamacha in Imphal West.
The observation started at 2:30 am at the memorial complex.
AMSU president Sanasam Subhachandra led around 5000 people, including student leaders from different States and students from various schools and colleges of the State and representatives of different civil societies in paying floral tributes at the complex at 9:30 am.
The offering of floral tributes followed a mass procession by the participants, which kicked-off from the memorial site.

The procession culminated at the DM College of Science multipurpose hall where a public meeting was later held.
AMSU observes Meekap Thokpa Numit every year to remember union's members H Lokendro and P Premananda who were killed in a police firing during the "Anti-Foreigner" movement of April 17, 1980 .
Addressing the public meeting, AMSU secretary general Manjit Sarangthem stated that swamping of smaller communities by larger groups has been a normal phenomenon and practice throughout the world.
He recounted the year 1950 during which then Chief Commissioner Himat Singh revoked the ILP system from the State of Manipur.
Unchecked influx of migrants into the State has been continuing since then, he said.
AMSU started the anti-foreigner movement since 1980, the union leader said and recalled the sacrifices made by H Lokendro and P Premananda in the struggle.
He alleged that the Manipur Government has no inclination to safeguard the indigenous people and dubbed the recent Bill passed by the State Assembly for protecting the indigenous population as an "unfortunate plan for the people of Manipur" .
Manjit was against the Government policy which permits all the hill people to reside freely in the valley without restriction by prohibiting people from the plain to dwell in the hill districts.
He also called for a united ILP movement to safeguard the indigenous population of the State.
Dr N Motilal Meitei, Associate Professor, Department of Life Science, Manipur University and former president of AMSU, Sanasam Subhachandra, president AMSU, RK Itocha, Assistant Professor, Political Science Department, Imphal College and former president of AMSU, Sinam Prakash, secretary general of North East Students' Organisation (NESO) and former president of AMSU, Seram Herajit, president of All Assam Manipuri Students' Union (AAMSU), advocate K Dhirendra, president of Tripura Manipuri Students' & Youths Coordination Committee and Sangba Huidrom, president of Shillong Manipuri Students' Union attended the event as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
