State observes International Sankirtana Day

The International Sankirtana Day was observed on Sunday at Chandrakriti Auditorium Hall, Imphal with an aim to promote the Manipuri Nat Sankirtana, which has been recognized by the International Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
The observance was jointly organised by International Sankirtana Day Celebration Committee and Shri Shri Govindaji Nat Sankirtana Academy.
Speaking at the function, Chief Minister O Ibobi pointed out that though Manipur is a small State compared to other States in India, its tradition, culture and contributions to sports is well-known world wide.
Manipuri Nat Sankirtana has been recognized not only in India but around the world and even the UNESCO has inscribed it in its intangible heritage cultural list, stated O Ibobi.
He called on the people of the State to preserve the various forms of age-old culture and traditions inherited from "our forefathers" .
Recalling the contributions made by erstwhile king of independent Manipur Bhagyachandra in the field of arts and culture, O Ibobi appealed the people to contribute their mite in promoting culture and heritage of Manipur.
The Chief Minister also greeted cultural representatives of outside the State who visited the Manipur and attended the function.
Ibobi also announced possible sanctioning of funds for the annual observation of the International Sankirtana Day.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister also stated that the Government has granted permission to set up a film institute in the State.
Around 250 acres of land in Imphal East has been reserved for the purpose and plan is underway to provide facilities of outdoor and indoor film shootings", added O Ibobi.
He also mentioned that once the Cultural University in Manipur becomes fully functional, the Government will also provide facilities to translate the Manipuri Nat Sankirtana in various languages.
The function was attended by MLA L Nandakumar as President while Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam, MLAs Y Surchandra, K Sarat, E Chand and O Landhoni being the Guests of Honour.
Many Manipuris from outside the State also attended the observation and a number of prominent persons who work in the field of culture were also felicitated during the function.
