Black day observation begins

The Black day observation in connection with the commemoration of 283rd Anniversary of Puya Meithaba (burning of ancient manuscripts) has been kick-started today at Bethel English School, Nambol.
Organised under the aegis of International Observation Committee on Puya Meithaba (ICOP) in association with Meitei National Front and All Manipur recognised private school welfare association, the Black day observation would continue till January 7 .
Director of Education (S) W Rajen Singh, chief convenor ICOP N Tomba, president AMRPSWA S Memcha, secretary Bethel English School K Tomba and convenor publicity sub committee ICOP M Naokhomba graced the inaugural function as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, Director W Rajen said that the historical incident of Puya Meithaba should be included in the school curriculum to impart its value and importance among the younger generation of the Manipuri Society.

He maintained that such initiative could motivate the younger generation to work for the betterment of the society.
The students should also be provided education on cultural and historical events besides providing general education, he added.
A memorandum to include the incident of Puya Meithaba in the school curriculum was also submitted by the convenor of Meitei National Front to the Director of Edn (S) W Rajen.
All participants who attended the inaugural function showed their solidarity to the observation by wearing black badges.
Meanwhile, Communities Network for Empowerment (CoNE) also observed the Black day in a small function held today at the office premises of the Network located at Palace Compound.
It was attended by CoNE president RK Nolinikanta, social activist Rakesh Naorem and convenor, publicity sub committee ICOP M Naokhomba.
