Imphal, January 02 2012:
Two women collapsed when a Zilla Parishad Member suddenly opened fire at a New Year's Day party at Kairang Maning Leikai in Imphal East district yesterday.
According to information culled from the spot, a group of women were organising a grand feast at the residence of one Khaidem Khoimu when Laipham Khunou Zilla Parishad Member Takhelmayum Nandababu (40) of Kairang Maning Leikai opened fire from his licensed double barrel shot gun at the gate of Khoimu at about 1 pm.
Khoimu went out and asked Nandababu not to open fire there.
At this, Nandababu retorted claiming he could open fire anywhere.
He also threatened to kill Khoimu, conveyed Khoimu's wife Basanti.
She said that Nandababu fired another four rounds of shots a little distance away from their residential gate.
Nandababu even tried to shoot towards the people but the shot went upward as Tomba who came along with Nandababu pushed his hand upwards as he was pulling the trigger, Basanti said.
As the local womenfolk assembled at the ground of Popular Union Club to lodge a strong protest, a team of Imphal East commandos arrived there and drove away the womenfolk into their homes.
One woman leader Chingangbam Rashitombi claimed that the commando team was sent there by Nandababu.
In addition to opening fire in public place, Nandababu also kicked Khoimu's brother, Jacob on the chest.
Frightened by the unwarranted firing, two women of Khoimu's family lost consciousness and collapsed.
One Bimola (62) is still undergoing treatment at JNIMS.
Taking strong exception against such haughty act of violence committed by a people's representative, Rashitombi asserted that Nandababu should bear all the responsibility for any unwanted consequences resulting from yesterday's incident .
