Imphal, May 13 2011:
Manipur State Commission for Women has started an investigation to the case related to death of Hijam Ningol Laitonjam Ongbi Darsana (25), who was married about two months back but found dead hanging inside her own room at her husband's house at Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai yesterday afternoon.
Her husband, Laitonjam Debendrajit (32) yesterday claimed Darsana was a patient suffering from depression while maternal family members of the deceased woman suspected some possible foul play behind the death.
Taking serious note of contradictory claims from both sides, an order had been issued by the Executive Magistrate for examining body of Darsana, who was found hanging with a cloth from a ceiling fan, before being taken down and deposited at the mortuary of RIMS hospital yesterday.
post mortem on the body was conducted today.
After the post-mortem, the body has been claimed by the family members of the husband for performing the last rites.
Meanwhile, based on the complaint by the maternal family members of Darsana, who cited foul play behind her death, Manipur State Commission for Women has registered a case and started investigation into it.
Accordingly, chairperson of the Commission Dr Ibetombi and other officials of the Commission were present during the post-mortem examination of the corpse at the RIMS morgue.
Afterward, they also met officials of Forensic Department of RIMS.
Later talking to mediapersons, Dr Ibetombi pointed out that in accordance to section 113, clause-II (b) of Indian Evidence Act, the husband and other members of the family are to be held responsible if a woman committed suicide at her husband's house within seven years of marriage.
Even if the woman committed suicide, what led her to take such an extreme step need to be investigated.
There could be various reasons behind the incident like ill-treatment by the husband and other in-laws members, Dr Ibetombi added.
