Imphal, November 08 2014 :
In their efforts to neutralize the bandh imposed along Imphal-Moreh highway in protest against the Government plan to build a sports university at Yaithibi Loukon, a police team led by the OC of Kakching police station vandalised a Masjid apart from desecrating the Holy Quran, alleged the Yaithibi Loukon Land Owners' Association and the Anjuman Nasual Islam, Sora.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club this afternoon, the association's president Md Alimuddin said that a police team barged into Masjid-E-Mohammadia, Sora Ching Wangma in the name of driving off bandh supporters yesterday afternoon.
Apart from vandalising many articles kept inside the Masjid like PA system, Imam's seats and the holy Quran, the police team fired tear gas shells, mock bombs and live bullets at the masjid.
The bandh called by the association went on peacefully but the excesses com- mitted by police in the name of neutralising the bandh ought to be condemned by all right thinking persons.
Alimuddin said that they were compelled to impose the highway bandh as the Government paid no heed to their repeated appeals to abort its plan for construction of sports university at Yaithibi Loukon.
The association has no objection to establishment of the sports university but it was only appealing to set up the sports university somewhere else, not at Yaithibi Loukon.
Mukti Mouluvi Abdul Haque of Anjuman Nasaul Islam demanded befitting action against the OC of Kakching police station and his team.
He said that the Anjuman would now join hands with the Yaitihibi Loukon Land Owners' Association for the future course of action.
