'Major socio-economic and political reforms need of the hour'

A one-day panel discussion on the theme 'Need for a New Socio-economic & Political Vision for Manipur' was organized by United People's Front (UPF) at Art & Culture Department, Palace Compound here today.
Speaking as chief guest, Prof W Nabakumar, Department of Anthropology, Manipur University observed that the pace of development of the society should be accelerated in tandem with the growing globalization while noting that the fate of the State lies in the hands of the people.
He pointed out that the genesis of democratic system of the country has been giving enough room for political mileage and corruption thereby hindering the rate of development and growth.
Delivering key note address, N Rupachandra, secretary general of UPF said that it has become necessary to understand collectively about the present living condition of the people of the State and governance to meet requirement if there is any need or lapse.
Stating that half of the total 27 lakh population of the State are poor people with 48 percent earning a meager income of Rs 25 a day, he asserted that securing future of the people should be the parameter of development in the State which could be achieved by major economic and political reforms which is the need of the hour.
The discussion programme was also attended by BM Yaima Shah, president of UPF as president; Prof Chinglen Meisnam, Department of Economics and Hohen Thangjam, Assistant Professor of MB College as resource persons.
