BJP government has turned into dictatorship: CPI

Imphal, September 02 2021: Reacting strongly against violation of rights of opposition MPs and detaining intellectuals, historians, human rights activists and journalists who are critical of the functioning of the government under Sedition Act, CPI Manipur State Council has categorically stated that the BJP government is turning into a dictatorship gradually.

In a statement, CPI Manipur State Council secretary L Sotinkumar accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of turning into an authoritarian and introducing several policies which challenge the norms of parliamentary democracy, secularism, federalism and the general public.

Even in the parliament, the BJP government is using its position to bulldoze various bills without providing any room for proper discussion.

They even used large number of marshals to assault women MPs of the opposition and it marked a dark chapter in the history of Indian parliament, L Sotinkumar said.

He also alleged the BJP government of using Pegasus malware of NSO Group to spy on opposition leaders, NGOs, journalists and activists.

However, the government has been refusing to give a proper response following which the matter has now reached the Supreme Court.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic and fall in GPD, the government is still standing against the farmers on the three anti- farmer laws even though farmers across the country have been organising protests against the farm laws.

As a result, the country is witnessing severe economic crisis.

Narendra Modi, who had boasted to steer the country towards 5 billion economy, is himself witness to regression of the country's economy due to his pro-corporate policies, Sotinkumar maintained.

At the same time, the strategies adopted up by the government to fight the pandemic are full of flaws.

Even though the vaccination drive began from January, the government has not been able to vaccinate 60 per cent of the total population, Sotinkumar said.

CPI also demanded the government to deposit Rs 7500 into the bank accounts of all families, who are not eligible to pay income tax, reduce tax on fuel, withdraw the three farm laws, stop privatisation of public sector undertakings, vaccinate teachers and staff members of educational institutes, take up measures to reopen educational institutes, increase MGNREGS work to 200 days per year, and release intellectuals, activists and journalists who are being detained under Sedition Act.

The statement further said that CPI state unit will fully support and participate in the nation-wide protest by 19 opposition parties from September 20 to 30 .
