Govt urged to control price of essential items

Imphal, October 28 2021: While raising alert on the impending impact on the economy of Manipur (Kangleipak) when the third wave of Covid-19 pandemic hits the state amidst its already troubling economy, Protection and Preservation Committee, Manipur (PPCM) has urged the government to control the price of essential items.

In a statement, PPCM publicity sub-committee convener Laikhuram Jayenta pointed out that the prices of essential goods have sky-rocketed.

Unfortunately, the government seems to be overlooking this harsh reality.

He also urged Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Weight and Measurement Department of Manipur to check the weight and prices of goods and items under Manipur Consumer Rule 1989 in view of the approaching Ningol Chakkouba festival.

It is the duty of the government to check the activities of the sellers and control the prices, he added.

Contending that the outsiders are fixing the prices of essential items at whatever rate they want, he asserted that the government simply announced the prices of goods and items during the previous Covid-19 pandemic but did not looked into the matter.

Making it clear that the outsiders should not monopolise and control the markets according to the whims as if it were their captive markets, Jayenta said that PPCM will look into the matter seriously and its members will begin inspection in markets.

He stressed that the decision taken by mothers of Ima Keithel for restricting selling of indigenous clothes by non-Manipuris is a correct one.

Urging the people to celebrate Ningol Chakkouba festival with clear understanding of its core idea and essence, Jayenta exhorted all not to indulge in the race for gifts that will only benefit outsiders and present local products as gifts only so as to promote the local products and help the local artisans.
