Imphal, February 03 2016: Manipur Peoples' Party central committee member AK Sanaton today observed that N Sovakiran should respectfully step down from his current position as the party president as his term is nearing the end.

AK Sanaton in a press meet today said an elected member of the party takes over office as party president for three years.

On completion of the term, the party holds a general conference one month prior to the full maturity of the term wherein the new party president is elected.

Sovakiran, whose term will be over by March this year has not convened any general conference till date.

Alleging Sovakiran of breaking the party rules, AK Sanaton said the former is behaving as if MPP is a party that belongs to himself.

He further accused Sovakiran of attempting to dissolve the party by diverting from the party rules.

Sovakiran, at present is provided security at his office.

Sanaton has urged the State Government to recall the security services and demanded that Sovakiran leave the party for the better.

MPP started out as a strong regional party, a party that boasted of serving the ethnic identity of the Manipuris.

Today, however, the party has lost its appeal due to various factors said Sanaton and appealed to all the members of the party to join hands and try to make a comeback to its former self.

AK Sanaton said he has been a part of the MPP central committee for as long as 40 years.

A general conference of the party was convened on January 30 at the residence of MPP general secretary N Singhajit wherein he was unanimously elected the party president for the new term.

The meeting also took up various resolutions including the strengthening of the party, admitting new members into the party and to urge other members to stop following Sovakiran.

On his alleged expulsion from the party along with vice-president N Ojit, administration organiser S Dilip, RO L Apabi and general secretary (publicity) N Singhajit, Sanaton said they have been wrongly accused by the party president.

The party rules, since Sovakiran took the office as party president, have been poorly followed.

Annual party conferences and such other important traditions of the party have been consciously ignored leading to the decline of MPP.

Former member of the Federal Party, N Sovakiran joined MPP on September 19, 2006.The party has been unable to produce a single candidate to contest in any election since he took office, Sanaton stated.

A handful of people have came forward seeking the party's ticket to contest in the upcoming 2017 Assembly election, said Sanaton and added that this opportunity should not be wasted.

He also urged MPP members to unite and strengthen the party.
