Imphal, October 17 2014 :
Even as the last rites of the 68-year-old woman from Churachandpur district's Vengnom South, New Lamka, who was found dead after she went missing for 12 days, were performed without conducting post mortem examination this morning, no case regarding the mysterious death of the woman has been taken up by any police station of the district so far.
The mentally unstable aged woman, identified as Vungching, was found dead on a steep hill near Saidan village, around 7 km away from her house yesterday.
She was found in a semi-naked state with only her inner skirt intact.
A team of representatives from Women Action for Development and Centre for Social Development, accompanied by reporters, enquired about the incident at Churachandpur police station and Churachandpur District Women police station today.
Officers in these two police stations told the team that nobody has informed them about the incident, as such no case has been taken up so far in this connection.
As SP was not present in his office, the team later met the Additional SP of the district.
He told the team that he came to know about the incident only through newspaper reports.
He also assured the team to look into the incident.
Later, the team visited the locality of the deceased.
However her family was not ready to make any comment on the incident.
A middle-aged woman told the team that the worried family of the aged woman searched their mother for 12 days and they found her body only yesterday.
She added that family members along with villagers had performed Vungching's last rites without informing about the incident to the police.
After hearing the said news, WAD secretary Sobita Mangsatabam, who led the team from Imphal, expressed her suspicion to a group of women that the incident might be a rape and murder case.
Sobita questioned them how an elderly woman could go up 2 km on a steep hill.
She also told them that a post mortem examination must be conducted on the body to ascertain whether the woman was raped and murdered as she was found semi-naked.
After listening to Sobita's opinion, the group of women later opined that a post mortem examination must have been conducted.
Vungching was mentally unstable and she used to ask her own address to others everytime she moved out from her locality.
Family and locals believed that she was guided by an evil spirit and she died due to starvation.
Although a missing report was filed on October 6 at Churachandpur police station, police were not informed regarding the recovery of Vungching's body.
