Imphal, October 17 2014 :
The Fishery Department is targeting to produce 75, 000 kilos of fish in this year's fish mela to be held in connection with Ningol Chakouba at Mapal Kangjeibung.
Notably, in the past, the fish mela was held at Hapta Kangjeibung.
However, it was shifted to Mapal Kangjeibung for this years' edition following closure of Sanjenthong Bridge for its construction.
Sources from Fishery Department said the fish mela of 2010 saw a production of 51, 000 kg of fish against the set target of 50, 000 kg; 65, 000 kg of fish against 60, 000 in 2011; 40, 000 kg of fish against 62, 500 in 2012 and 68, 100 kg of fish against the set target of 65, 000 kg in the year 2013 .
The department has been trying to increase production of fish in the mela each year considering the increase demand of fish from the people.
As in the past, the department is hopeful that production of fish in this year's mela will be more than that of the set target of 75, 000 kg.
Production of fish in the State is done in a total area of 19, 400 hectares mainly in ponds.
Area where small fish is produced is around 200 hectares out of the total area.
The Fishery Department is collaborating with RKVY; National Fishery Department Board Hyderabad; North East Council; Inland Fishery & Aquaculture Development and RIDF NABARD to construct more water bodies to facilitate increase production of fish in the State.
The required quantity of fish for the total population of the State is 40, 000 metric tonne per year.
However, the State could manage only to produce 32, 000 metric tonne at present.
It is assumed that once the construction of water bodies under various schemes is completed then there will be no shortage of fish in the State.
List of different types of fish and its rates to be avail in this year's mela will be announced by District Officers of Fishery Department; representatives of Consumers' Club, DC and fishermen soon.
