Fishery Estate at Khullakpat

Under the funding from North East Council (NEC), arrangement for setting up of Regional Fishery Estate at Khullakpat, Mayang Imphal in Imphal West has been already started.
Sources said the approval for setting up of the Regional Fishery Estate was given after Fishery Department sent a project to NEC.
The estate will use modern technologies to facilitate production of fish in the tate including construction of around 110 ponds where different type of fish will be reared.
It will also hand over its technologies to those persons who are interested in the profession of fishing.
According to a report of Fishery Department, areas where rearing of fish is done during the year 2013 and 14 is 19, 400 hectares.
However, total area in the State where fish can be reared in large scale is approximately 56, 461.15 hectares including lake, pond, river etc.
The quantity of fish required for the total 27.21 lakhs population of the State as per Census Record of 2011 is 40, 000 metric tonne per year.
However, the State could be able to produce 12, 000 metric tonne of fish per year.
The remaining required quantity of fish is imported from other States like Assam and Andhra Pradesh, the source added.
