Imphal, July 07 2015 :
Apart from cancellation of its registration, the Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP) has been de-recognised by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The party's symbol featuring a 'working farmer' has also been frozen.
MSCP was set up by late former Chief Minister Wahengbam Nipamacha in 1997 and five of its candidates were elected in the last Manipur Legislative Assembly election.
But all the five MSCP MLAs namely; Nemcha Kipgen, P Brojen, RK Imo, Janghemlung Panmei and Karam Thamarjit left the party and joined Indian National Congress (INC) along with their working president.
INC accepted their merger in April last year.
However, MSCP vice-president Adim Panmei vehemently objected the purported merger of MSCP with INC.
He re-organised the party's central executive committee and appointed 11 fresh office bearers.
The ECI sought opinions of working president Kh Devbrata and Adim Panmei separately on the controversy.
Adim Panmei informed the ECI that the party's central executive committee held a meeting in February this year and they had agreed to abolish the party and join BJP.
As there was no claim from any quarters about the existence of MSCP, the ECI asked Adim Panmei if the party's registration should be cancelled.
To this, Adim Panmei reportedly replied that there was no objection.
After listening to both parties, the ECI issued an order on June 22 to the effect that MSCP has been abolished.
Subsequently, the MSCP has been de-recognised and its symbol has been frozen.
The ECI's order was sent to the Chief Electoral Officer and the same order was forwarded to both Adim Panmei and Kh Devbrata.
