Five persons were killed and over 20 sustained injuries in separate accidents at Tamenglong and Thoubal district areas today.
At Tamenglong district a loaded truck fell into a gorge located between Khongshang and Rengpang under Nungba police station along the National Highway 53 claiming four lives.
Reports said over 30 persons were riding on the truck when the mishap occurred at around 11.30 am killing three persons on the spot and another later in the evening while all the travellers are informed to have suffered injuries of varying degree out of 18 critically wounded passengers have been admitted at medical centres in Imphal.
The truck heading towards Oinamlong from the district headquarters fell head-on into a 120 feet gorge.
Nungba police established the truck's registration number as ML01/3757 and was on its way to transport timber.
While three women died on the spot another person succumbed to injuries at Nungba Primary Health Centre in late afternoon.
The deceased have been identified as Gaiphoulung (35) and Honey Kamei (50) from Khongshang, Tingkouliu Gangmei (23) of Kambiron and K Guidinglu (50) from Rengpang.
Tingkouliu is said to be heading home after appearing at the recently concluded class XII examination at the district headquarters.
The ill-fated truck driven by one Anil Toppo could not be retrieved till late evening, conveyed the police.
The other accident occurred this morning at around 8 when a passenger bus hit a pedestrian at near Lilong Arapti.
Soon after the mishap local people converged at the scene and damaged the passenger bus, according to police source.
The victim has been identified as one Laishram Khomei (16) from Arapti Maning Leikai.
The body has not been claimed.
Lilong police has registered a case in the matter.
Registration number of the vehicle is MN04-3245.Youth shot dead: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a 25-year old youth at Heirok Bazar under Thoubal Police Station at around 8.30 pm today.
The slain youth has been identified as Richard Khundongbam of Heirok, according to police source.
On the other hand, Imphal West District Police apprehended four KYKL cadres and recovered Rs 2 lakhs and three demand letters during a cordon and search operation conducted in Deulahland area last night at around 9.
