Several Angami Unions have demanded capital punishment for Pezazoto Savino of Khonoma village, who had raped and murdered a Govt middle school teacher, Mrs Somy Koshy, at Mezomaon May 5, while the victim was on her way to school.
The unions said punishment of that magnitude would only help stop recurrence of such crime in future.
Terming the act of Pezazoto as "inhuman", the Angami Youth Organization (AYO) in a press release mad available tothe Network today in Kohima said said such act on a "devoted teacher and helpless lady" had no place in a civilized society and therefore, the culprit be awarded capital punishment Khonoma Students' Union also demanded that Pezazoto be awarded capital punishment.
A separate statement jointly issued by KSU president Medozevi Punyii and its general secretary Keneiseno Vakha said following the incident it had resolved never to remain silent to such a "satanic and inhuman crime".
It said the culprit, son of the Late Arheto and Mekhrieno of Khonoma village and an outcast from his family, had blackened the face of the village in particular and Nagas as a whole.
The union also cautioned that it would take action against anyone making attempt to bail out the culprit.
Terming the act of the culprit as "inhuman, barbaric, and beastly", the Western Angami Public Organization (WAPO) president Tsilie Sakhrie said "any person inflicting torture, rape and murder on innocent women has no place in a civilized society".
Stating that the culprit brought about great shame to its people, the WAPO urged the authorities concerned to award capital punishment to him.
Condemning the act, the Khonoma Riiffiino in a pi ess release said the culprit deserved the highest punishment befitting the crime committed.
The Western Angami Students' Union appealed to the authorities concerned not to make any compromise but take a firm action against the culprit.
