Stir against phumdi-huts eviction set to escalate

All Loktak Lake Areas Fishermen Union (ALLAFU) has threatened to go ahead with intense agitations if the State Government does not put an end to the ongoing eviction and burning down of phumdi huts on Loktak Lake.
A decision to this effect was taken during a public meeting held at Thanga Linglak Keithel under Bishnupur district today.
The public meeting also adopted a number of resolutions which included taking up intense agitations against destruction of Phumdi huts in defiance of the interim order of the Gauhati High Court, to disrupt all activities of LDA; scrapping of Manipur Loktak Lake Protection Act, 2006 immediately to safeguard the rights of the fishermen; institution of a Fishermen Welfare (Protection) Rights Act; establishment of appropriate places for resettlement of the evicted fishermen, decommissioning of Loktak Project being operated under National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHEPC) and the State Government, sitting together of the fishermen with members of various CSOs to discuss their problems, etc.

The public meeting was held with L Roy, Convenor of CORE and Phunindro Konsam, Chairman of COHR as Chief Guest and President respectively.
O Maipakchao, Advisor of All Loktak Lake Fishermen's Welfare Union and General Secretary of UNACSU, S Premjit were also present as Guests of Honour.
