Fishermen resolve

Fishing community of Loktak lake today held a meeting at Thanga Chinglak Bazar and resolved to stop all Government activities in the lake if the Government's move of dismantling huts built on phumdis is not stopped immediately.
The meeting held with representatives of different civil society organisations also adopted several other resolutions.
To put an end to the Government's act of dismantling and burning down huts of fishing families was one of the resolutions adopted at the meeting.
In case, the Government does not stop this act of victimising fishing families, intense agitation would be launched against the Government and all Government activities in and around the lake would be prohibited.
Scrapping the Manipur Loktak Lake Protection Act 2006 and replacement by Fishermen Welfare Protection Right Act was another resolution.
Urging the Government to take up a special programme for rehabilitation and resettlement of fishermen, de-commissioning of the Loktak Hydroelectric Project and arranging a joint meeting between fishermen and the State Government together with representatives of civil organisations on or before April 15 were the other resolutions adopted at the meeting.
