A free medical camp to detect 'high blood pressure' was organised by Association of Surgeons of India, Manipur State chapter for women vendors of Khwairamband Keithel in connection with the World Health Day observance today.
According to Association president Dr Ksh Kala Singh the free medical camp was specifically conducted at Khwairamband Keithel to enable the women vendors update their health status as they hardly find time to go for medical check-up due to everyday confinement in their respective trades in trying to support the family.
Informing that once an individual crosses 40 years of age he/she should try to maintain blood pressure level below 140/90 mmHg, Dr Kala said hypertension mostly results in heart and kidney failures as well as critical damage to blood veins and visual impairment.
He suggested minimal consumption of salt and cooking oil, avoid smoking and alcohol, regular exercises and reliance on fruit and vegetable-based diet as some of the means to combat high blood pressure, also referred as 'silent killer' .
The medical team also provided medicines to those women vendors whose blood pressure level as found to be high.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Manipur State Branch also observed World Health Day at IMA hall, Lamphelpat today.
Seventy delegates attended the programme which was held under the theme, 'High blood pressure' .
Prof Th Bhimo chaired the programme in which Prof Ng Taruni spoke on the topic, 'High blood pressure', said a press release.
