Imphal, January 29 2023:
While ridiculing that the Liquor Prohibition Act is only there for namesake, Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) secretary general Geetchandra Mangang has questioned how the sale and consumption of liquor could be prevented when liquor are allowed for selling through collection of tax from the liquor stores/vendors.
CADA, Nupi Samaj, Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup, Uripok Yambem Leikai Meira Paibi Apunba Nupi Lup jointly staged sit-in protest against legalisation of liquor at Uripok Yambem Leikai, here, on Sunday.
Speaking at the protest venue, CADA secretary general Geetchandra Mangang pledged its support to any initiative that will benefit the society but will never allow any move that would cause harm to the people.
Legalisation of liquor because of the failure of the government to prohibit it will drastically affect the society and is a big loss for the government, he contended.
Stating that the government enacted Liquor Prohibition Act and set up excise department for prohibition of sale and consumption of liquor, he observed that availability of liquor in the state everywhere testifies complete failure of the excise department.
In view of the failure of the department, CADA was formed with an objective to save the people from alcoholism and other addictions.
"Instead of chasing away the poor women street vendors who are selling vegetables to sustain their families, why can't authorities disperse the people selling alcohol at Kangjeibung in broad day light?", he questioned, while asking how liquor could be prohibited when people are allowed to sell liquor by collecting tax from them.
