Imphal, January 29 2023:
As part of their ongoing protest against the partial lifting of alcohol prohibition in the State through the Cabinet decision of September 20, 2022, Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) in association with local womens' groups organised a sit-in protest at Yaipha Shanglen, Uripok Yambem Leikai today.
According to a statement issued by CADA, the sit-in protest was jointly organised by the All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), All Manipur Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup (Tammi Chingmi), Uripok Yambem Leikai Meira Paibi Apunba Nupi Lup and CADA.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Yambem Momon, president, All Manipur Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup (Tammi Chingmi) stated that decades ago women of Manipur had launched the 'Nisa bandh' movement to combat the negative impacts of narcotic substances on society.
"Many have succumbed to alcohol addiction/abuse.
Women and children bear the brunt of abuse that alcoholics rain down on their families", she maintained.
She questioned if the suffering of such families will be erased by the legalisation of alcohol.
Condemning the State's decision to legalize alcohol, she urged the Government to take stock of their ongoing protest and revoke alcohol legalisation.
She also stated that the State should be held accountable for the occurence of any untoward incident in this connection.
