Thoubal, December 09 2014:
Women Action for Development (WAD), as part of its international fortnight observation protesting violence against women, exposed the woeful plights of a woman who suffers the torture of her husband and mother inlaw.
27 years old Phajabi (name changed), originally from Heirok Part II Keithel Maning and now residing at Heirok Part-I Heituppokpi has been allegedly surviving atrocities and torture in the hands of her husband, Noren and her mother in-law.
Talking to reporters during a press meet organised by WAD, Phajabi said that she and husband Noren married on April 28, 2011 after mutual consent.
While her husband is working as a salesman in Imphal, her mother in-law is a peon in the Vigilance dept.
After the couple got married, they decided to shift their house to a more spacious one.
As such, Phajabi sold all her valuable jewelleries to realise the family's aspiration of living in more spacious house.
Both her husband and mother in-law started torturing Phajabi soon after the family moved to the new place.
Her husband allegedly abused her telling she was not attractive, she was illiterate, short in height etc.
She survives the emotional as well as physical torture.
Her husband also mixed sands and stones in her food besides physically assaulting her on many occasions.
She has also been locked outside the house on some occasions.
Her mother in-law remains a mute spectator to the atrocities and violence against her.
The husband even threatened to kill her, she said.
Mother of two sons, Phajabi also wished to register their homestead patta in the name of their older son.
She also came to know that their homestead was sold without her knowledge.
However, at the intervention of the local pradhan they were allowed to occupy it still.
Phajabi made a complaint to the police in this regard but no action has been taken up so far.
Umbra Takhelchangbam of WAD urged the police to give additional efforts to end all forms of violence against women.
