A day after the agitation over the killing of a woman crippled normal life here, some disgruntled youths imposed another flash bandh over the killing of an elderly man last night reportedly by a I speeding auto rickshaw in a hit and run case, crippling normal life for about an hour.
An elderly man identified as Hrangdovel Khawbung (65) of Parbung but presently staying at Muolvaiphei was reportedly rammed by an auto-rickshaw at Light House lane around 6pm yesterday and left him unattended.
Even as he was rushed to the district hospital for treatment, his condition deteriorated and succumbed at around 7.30pm.Incensed by the hit-and- run case, some youth armed with clubs early today imposed a flash bandh in the town forcing shops to pull down their shutters and vehicles to stay off the road.
However, another group of people who were annoyed at the way the bandh was imposed countered their efforts and a brief altercation ensued for about an hour.
The commotion soon subsided as both the parties agreed to impose the bandh only on auto-rickshaws, paving the way for normal activities to resume almost immediately.
Deputy Commissioner Lunminthang Haokip then visited the victim's family at the hospital and assured them of prompt action besides promising them aid.
The victim's wife Lalthluongpui on her part told him that she would not claim her husband's body until the auto was identified and its driver arrested.
The DC was learnt to have instructed the police and the district transport office to summon all autos in the district and find out who was behind the mischief.
Meanwhile, three student bodies have also jointly petitioned the Deputy Commissioner to urgently take necessary action to nab the culprit.
The memorandum signed by ZSF president S Kap-khanmuan.
KSO Churachand-pur Jt Secretary L Minlal, and HSA Churachandpur Jt Hqtrs president Laltanpuia urged the DC to nab the culprit within 24 hours so as to prevent public tension and to do justice to the victim's family.
As the victim's family stood firm on not claiming the body until the culprit was arrested, the body was still lying unclaimed at the hospital morgue at the time of filing this report.
Autopsy however has been conducted during the day.
