Ukhrul, Tamenglong celebrate Hand loom Day

Like in other parts of the country, the National Handloom Day was celebrated in Ukhrul and Tamenglong districts on Saturday to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement launched on this day in 1905 to promote local handloom artisans and their products.
The day is being celebrated since 2015 across the country by organising exhibition on local products, awarding crafts persons and launch of new products.
In Ukhrul district, the celebration was held at Wino Bazar Weaving Cluster under the Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFRUTI).
The Scheme has Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (HE), Guwahatias nodal agency while Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts is the technical agency and philanthropic organisations act as the implementing agencies.
The celebration held at Wino Bazar, Ukhrul town was attended by over 20 artisans of the Cluster including implementing agency's chairperson Tharawon Shaiza.
The celebration in Tamenglong district was organised by 44 Assam Rifles of 22 Sector/ IGAR (East) with conduct of a one-day Crafts Fair at ward number 6, Tamenglong town.
The event began with a ribbon cutting and lamp lighting ceremony by commandant of Tamenglong Battalion.
The handicrafts included in the fair were in the form of cloth embroidery, cane and bamboo, wood carving and artistic weaving.
Young artisans were also felicitated to encourage them keep alive the age old tradition.
Speaking at the event, 44 AR commandant highlighted the contribution of handloom to the socio-economic development of the country and urged people of Tamenglong to become "vocal for local" in order to re-awaken demand and to throw a lifeline to the local artisans and weavers who are struggling to survive amid the pandemic restrictions by using handloom and handicrafts as much as possible.
He further emphasised that the correct and positive approach always goes a long way in transforming distressing times into opportunities, adversities into triggers of development and progress.
Promotion of handloom and handicraft products will also support the Make in India' initiative of the Prime Minister, he said.
