Imphal, September 09 2022:
Although India is the largest producer of milk in the world, one of its states, Manipur is unable to ensure adequate supply of water let alone milk, Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Department director Dr Ng Ibotombi Singh has remarked.
AICRPA (Forage Crops & Utilisation) of College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University (CAU), organised a Kharif Forage Day programme at the assembly hall of the college on Friday.
Speaking as chief guest of the programme, Dr Ng Ibotombi informed that Haryana and Punjab are the chief producers of milk in the country.
In Manipur's context, the milk produced in the state is not enough to meet the demands of its population.
The main reason for this is the drop in rearing of cattle and the loss of grazing areas, he said.
In addition to loss of land, the forest lands are also disappearing, which has severely affected the ecological balance and as such, livestock are fed with concentrated feed due to shortage of fresh vegetation.
The department is aware of the difficulties faced by livestock farmers and thus, have been taking up all necessary action in the matter, he stated.
The programme was also attended by AICRPA (Forage Crops & Utilisation) of College of Agriculture, CAU in-charge Dr L Nabachandra Singh as president and CAU, Imphal director of Research Dr S Basanta Singh as guest of honour.
As part of the programme, the dignitaries paid a visit to the CAU Research farm at Andro.
