An awareness programme on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 was conducted for inmates of the relief camp at Ideal Girls College, Akampat, Imphal East, on Tuesday.
The one-day programme was organised by Maipak and Thaballei Foundation under the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Manipur.
Inaugurating the event, Social Welfare Director Sheikh Abdul Hakim said the awareness session would greatly benefit inmates, especially children and parents.
He stressed that understanding the POCSO Act is key to ensuring justice and creating a safe environment for children.
"Knowing what the Act covers and the protections it provides is essential to prevent sexual crimes against children", he said, adding that mental health is equally vital for well-being.
He also highlighted various welfare schemes for women and children being implemented by the department.
Keisham Pradip Kumar, Chairperson of the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) and chief guest, said the programme will help children and guardians understand what to do if a sexual offence occurs.
"Children must know how to protect themselves and where to seek help", he noted.
MCPCR Legal Consultant Thiyam Rajkishore explained provisions of the POCSO Act and support available to victims.
Committee on Protection of Meitei Victims vice-president Irom Rajen also attended.
