Imphal, May 21 2014 :
Former Deputy Chief Minister and MPP stalwart Dr L Chandramani has described the worst-ever performance of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha polls as the people's mandate against a party which is in the grip of a single family.
One of the major reasons behind the poll debacle faced by Indian National Congress (INC) was that the oldest political party has been functioning at the helm of Gandhi family for long a long time, and the people did not like it any more, Dr Chandramani, Advisor, Manipur People's Party told Hueiyen Lanpao on Tuesday.
Price rise, corruption and a want of a new change in the country were also among major factors for the Congress' defeat in the national elections, he added.
Dr Chandramani further commented that the choice of the people to bring about the much needed change become BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi during the high-voltage elections as they disliked the Congress.
Modi sought vote for the BJP and repeatedly promised in his vigorous poll campaigning to heal the woes of the people who started to trust him as a true leader, Chandramani added.
The MPP leader, however, pointed out that though the resounding victory of BJP was a historic record, the saffron party failed to get 50 percent mandate of the national electorate.
Modi needs to work hard with utmost caution to fulfill the desire of the people, he added.
Asked whether the Modi wave ever touched Manipur during the polls, Dr Chandramani gave a positive note and said this time the State BJP got more votes than it had secured during the time of Sh Modhumangol Sharma and former Chief Minister W Nipamacha Singh.
But the BJP must not forget that although MPP was in power twice under the leaderships of Md Alimuddin and RK Ranbir, it did not field its candidates in the recent election to the Inner and the Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituencies, Chandramani said without mentioning the exact reason for staying away from the electoral fray.
