Speaking on the occasion, Thoidingjam Tombi remarked that although there are around 1800 languages in the country, only 6 have obtained classical language status.
He then said that around 70 percent of the efforts/processes needed to elevate Manipuri language to classical language status have been completed, while appreciating the announcement of Rajya Sabha MP and titular King Leishemba Sanajaoba that it will soon be granted the classical language status.
Stressing the need for the authors and literary organisations of the state to keep a close watch on the matter, Tombi, however, lamented the sad status of the Art and Culture Department.
As such, he urged for allocating more budget to the department, while exhorting the authors of the state to publish their works, thereby helping to expand the literary wealth of the state.
