Imphal, January 16 2022:
Contending that scheduling of the polling day for the first phase of Manipur legislative assembly election on February 27 that falls on Sunday has hurt the sentiments of the Christians, All Manipur Christians Organisation (AMCO) has urged the Election Commission to reschedule the said date to show solidarity and respect religious sentiment of the Christians.
In a release, AMCO expressed delight over the ensuing Election as the people will once again get the opportunity to elect their representatives to the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
While stating that AMCO has always campaigned for free and fair election, it however, pointed out that as Sunday is a sacred day, which is set aside to worship and revere the God fixing the polling day on Sunday has led the Christian community in Manipur to question if attempts are on to desacralize its religious significance.
Furthermore, AMCO is apprehensive that a large number of voters may refrain from exercising their franchise as the polling day falls on Sunday thus, purposely robbing the people their right to universal franchise, the released stated, while adding that India is a secular country where every religion in the past has peacefully coexisted.
As such any policy and decision that tantamount to undermining and desacralizing religious beliefs of the Christians is totally uncalled for, it maintained.
