Green Foundation to compensate organic farmers

Imphal, August 06 2021: Green Foundation CEO Urikhinbam Himmat on Friday said that the foundation will compensate farmers if they face reduction in crop yield while practicing organic farming under Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER).

Himmat gave the assurance during a distribution function of silica based bio fertilisers and bio-pesticides to farmers of Imphal East and Imphal West districts, who have completed training conducted by the Foundation as part of the policy of Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA) under MOVCDNER, on Friday.

Speaking at the function held at its office premises at Kwakeithel Awang Thiyam Leikai, Himmat, however, hastened to add that there will be certain terms and conditions for providing the compensation and the policy will cover not only the organic farmers registered under MOVCDNER but also other farmers, who are actually practicing organic farming.

But they should register with the Foundation to avail the facility, he said.

Deputy director of agriculture and MOVCDNER nodal officer S Radhapyari said that the department has been putting efforts to produce some indigenous products of the state as organic products since 2016 and Green Foundation is a registered service provider under MOVCDNER.

It is praiseworthy of the Foundation to put their efforts towards producing bio-fertilisers in the state instead of importing them from other states.

It is a welcoming step which could revolutionise organic farming in the state, she said.

Former dean of College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University professor M Iboton said that the bio-fertiliser produced by Green Foundation is made from bio-char (charcoal of rice husk) and Azospirillum.

It helps paddy plants in absorbing nitrogen from atmosphere and also in protection against a pest infection called blast.

Moreover, it increases organic carbon in soil and enhances soil fertility.

Using this bio-fertiliser will prove fruitful to the farmers of the state, he said.
